Gynecology Care Q & A
Why gynecology care services are available?
To ensure you receive comprehensive care, Dr. Motesharrei offers a wide variety of gynecology care services in her fully equipped office. These services include:
- Routine exams
- STD testing
- Pap smears
- Vaginal infection testing
- Breast cancer screenings
- Human papillomavirus (HPV) testing
Dr. Motesharrei also can diagnose unexplained breast and pelvic pain, as well as premenstrual disorders. She has in-office technology to confirm conditions like endometriosis and fibroids.
What’s the difference between fibroids and endometriosis?
Fibroids are noncancerous growths that develop on the lining of your uterus and are very common in women during their childbearing years. Fibroids can grow large enough to cause chronic pelvic pain and even distort your pelvic region.
Endometriosis is a condition where the endometrium, the lining of your uterus, grows beyond the uterine cavity. Each month the lining continues to act normally, thickening and breaking down as part of your menstrual cycle. Because the tissue has no way to exit the body, it becomes trapped causing pain and abnormal bleeding.
Both of these conditions may require treatment if you suffer pain or other symptoms that interfere with your quality of life. Dr. Motesharrei offers custom treatments, including in-office surgical procedures to remove endometrial tissue or painful fibroids.
In many cases, minimally invasive techniques that require only small incisions can address the root cause of your pain without unnecessary trauma to your body. Dr. Motesharrei offers the latest surgical technologies and techniques in-office, including laparoscopic and robot-assisted surgeries.
How often do I need a gynecology exam?
To stay on top of your reproductive and general health, Dr. Motesharrei recommends annual visits for a routine pelvic exam. This exam allows her to evaluate your vaginal health and check for abnormalities in your reproductive organs. In addition to your pelvic exam, you may also need a routine breast exam to identify signs of cancer as early as possible.
Depending on your existing health, your personal and family history, and your lifestyle, she may perform other screenings in addition to a routine exam, such as STD screenings. Dr Motesharrei also offers HPV screenings, a routine test that checks your cervical cells for changes that may indicate cervical cancer.
If you need to schedule a pelvic exam or need other gynecology care services, call Women’s Global Health of Northern Virginia today or request an appointment online now.
